Cruising along this stretch of the lower Danube brings much of the historic and contempory culture of the "New Europe" into view: Serbia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria and their capital cities. A highlight is the famous Portile de Fier, or Iron Gate, a two-mile stretch of rocky gorges between the Carpathian and Balkan mountain chains. Navigable only for the past 100 years, the narrow gap illustrates the power of the Danube as it courses toward the Black Sea. Further down is the natural paradise of the Delta, a vast, Everglades-like labyrinth of marshes, dunes and channels home to more than 300 bird and 45 freshwater fish species.
